Mumbai: The rupee on Friday declined by nine paise to close at 82.85 (provisional) against the US dollar at the interbank forex market. Heavy selling in the domestic equity market and strengthening of the dollar overseas weighed on the rupee. Marketmen, however, capped some of the rupee’s losses due to fall in crude oil prices.

The rupee opened weak at 82.84 at the Interbank Foreign Exchange market and ended the day at 82.85 against the US dollar, down by nine paise. The rupee touched a high of 82.73 and a low of 82.89 during the day. In the previous trading session, the rupee had closed at 82.76 per dollar.

Meanwhile, the dollar index, which reflects the strength of the dollar against six major world currencies, rose 0.13 per cent to 104.69. Global oil benchmark Brent crude futures declined 2.29 per cent to USD 79.35 per barrel. BSE’s 30-share Sensex declined 461.22 points to close at 61,337.81 points. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were net sellers in the capital market and sold shares worth Rs 710.74 crore on Thursday, according to stock market data. (agency)
