“I’m not going to predict that all our problems will go away in the new year,” Sunak said. “But 2023 will give us the opportunity to showcase Britain very well on the world stage… to defend freedom and democracy where we find it under threat,” he said. He cited the barbaric war in Ukraine as one of the major challenges ahead.

Sunak pledged to cooperate with Ukraine in the New Year message. The leader of the opposition Labor Party, Sir Keir Starmer, also admitted in his New Year message that it had been a difficult year. He said that Britain needs to change the way it does politics. Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey also described 2022 as a difficult year, but said the new year was an opportunity to move forward.
