New Delhi: India will host the Women’s World Boxing Championship in 2023, while two years ago India was stripped of hosting the Men’s World Championship for not depositing the required fees. India has never had a men’s world championship but will have a women’s championship for the third time. Earlier, the championship has been held in Delhi in 2006 and 2018.

Boxing Federation of India general secretary Hemant Kalita said, “We have got the hosting rights for the Women’s World Championship and will now organize it in the end of March and first week of April.” International Boxing Federation President Umar Kremlov is on his first visit to India and the dates of the tournament will be finalized during his visit.

The tournament can be played at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. India had lost the hosting of the men’s championship in 2021 to Serbia because of non-payment of hosting fees. In the last Women’s World Championship, India had won three medals, including Nikhat Zareen’s gold medal. (agency)
